JACQUELINE AGAHIGIAN

My name is Jacqueline Agahigian and I am a Television-Radio Major with a minor in Art History. Before this class, I was just only interested in TV production. NTT helped expand my horizons with the future of media. Because I was able to learn new techniques and skills from NTT, I was able to learn how to create content for website development for my final project. Not only did this give me a chance to learn website content, technical skills, and management, it also let combine my love and passion for education and media to come together. I was able to be the content coordinator for NTTs website. I now have a new inspiration and love for something I never thought I would try before.

SARAH HORBACEWICZ

New Telecom Tech made me question assumptions that many fellow peers and others held about technology and journalism in general. I enjoyed looking at the history of technological inventions that we are so accustomed to today. It’s difficult to learn about changing technology in a traditional classroom setting as the world is evolving so quickly.

My podcast Six Degrees explores the concept of ‘six degrees of separation’ in the small city of Ithaca. I picked up a telephone book, flipped to a page, and interviewed a random member of the community. From there, connections developed — and led to subsequent episodes. Six degrees now runs on WICB and has won both Best Podcast in colleges across NY at the NYSBA’s and across colleges nationally at the CBI’s!

ANTONIO SMITH

My name is Antonio Smith, and I am a 20 year old Junior TVR major from Baltimore, MD. Before taking New Telecommunication Technologies, I was set on just one aspect of the Communication industry and that was directing in TV production. Now, I constantly find myself exploring new realms of the communication, especially the world of virtual reality and 360 video. Many love to associate the word “Immersion” with 360 video and VR. Although that is true, what I also realized when creating my tour of the Inner Harbor in Downtown Baltimore is that these technologies provoke your brain to expand to places it is has never, which in turn allows your to make experiences that can potentially affect a mass audience. I am most proud of my 360 Tour and all of the projects I have done in NTT, as this class has taught me to always think outside the box when creating, which is a skill that is vital in the Television and Radio industry.

BRANDON GALIONE

To me, technology is the medium between creators and the message they are trying to spread. By making technology not only accessible, but also usable and uncomplicated, it mitigates and alleviates any risk and drama from this simple two-way connection. It allows the creator to focus more on the audience and purpose, spending less time worrying about whether or not the vehicle containing their message will even work to begin with.

Times are changing, and so too should our classrooms. New Telecommunications Technologies, or NTT for short, is an accurate representation of this philosophy. By exploring several new avenues of digital literacy, and being able to assimilate a bevy of new technological mediums, we (the students) were able to expand our horizons and further our knowledge of the world around us. We dove head first and earned a decent understanding of how each of these technologies operated and functioned.

I can especially speak to the importance of these new technologies, because I am the student president of our drone program here at IC, the Ithaca College Drone Squadron (www.icdronesquadron.com). Working on a daily basis with new and rapidly changing technologies, and implementing them in our students daily and professional lives, is what makes it all worth it. Therefore, to have a class that let’s us express our creative freedoms and get all the time spent learning these tools out of the way, is exceptional, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity.
